Body recovered from Lalmai paddy field
Tazmin’s body was recovered on Thursday morning from a paddy field in Jagatpur village, under Lalmai upazila. She was later identified as the daughter of Abdul Alim, whose family had been living in a rented home in Cumilla city’s Racecourse area.
Her family’s roots are in Chatiatala village of Jashore Sadar upazila. Abdul Alim works for pharmaceutical company Renata in the Cumilla region.
Tazmin had been enrolled in Class Seven at Farida Bidyayatan School in Cumilla city. School authorities said she had not attended classes since February this year.
Police outline alleged journey
Police said Tazmin hired a CNG-run autorickshaw on October 8 near the Tisha bus counter in the Paduar Bazar Bishwa Road area while trying to return home. The fare for the trip had been set at Tk 300.
Sumon allegedly persuaded her that a shortcut would make the journey quicker. Instead of taking her directly home, police said, he drove toward a secluded area. Investigators allege that he raped Tazmin and then killed her by strangulation.
After the killing, Sumon allegedly removed Tazmin’s iPhone from her handbag. Police said the handbag was left behind in the paddy field where the body was discovered.
The alleged movements after the crime form a major part of the police account. Investigators said Sumon went to a pond in front of Kachikata Mosque and bathed there. He then travelled by another CNG-run autorickshaw to the Bakhrabad area.
Police said he concealed the phone in bushes beside a pond in Bakhrabad before leaving for Chattogram. Following his arrest, investigators used information obtained from him to locate and recover the phone from the bushes near that pond.
Investigation continues after arrest
Police have accused Sumon of rape and murder in the case. The recovery of the phone is part of the material police have linked to their investigation, along with the route they say the suspect took after the alleged crime.
