Saudi Expatriate Dies After Fire in Sutrapur Family Dispute

Thebangladaily.com – A 26-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate from Saudi Arabia died on Sunday after sustaining extensive burns in a fire at an ancestral home in Old Dhaka’s Sutrapur area. The victim, Imon Siddiq Bepari, was being treated in the intensive care unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery when he died at about 11:50am on September 20.

Dr Md Sultan Mahmud, a resident surgeon at the institute, confirmed that Imon had burns across 90 percent of his body. His injuries followed a fire on Saturday afternoon in the Shyambazar Chamak Tuli neighbourhood of Sutrapur.

Five People Injured in Saturday Fire

The incident took place at around 4:30pm on September 19. Five people suffered burn injuries and were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for care.

Imon, Tania, Siddiq and Rajib were later moved to the ICU because their conditions were serious. The injured people lived beside one another at their ancestral residence in the Shyambazar Chamak Tuli area.

Rajib works as a mechanic at National Hospital. Dhulu is employed as an electrician, while Tania is an honours student at a women’s college in Old Dhaka. The fire left several members of the neighbouring households requiring emergency treatment.

The National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery routinely handles patients needing specialised care for severe burn injuries. Cases involving extensive burns can require intensive monitoring and prolonged treatment, particularly when large areas of the body have been affected.

Argument Began Over Stagnant Water

The events that preceded the fire were linked to a disagreement between family members. Sonia Akter, the wife of Arifur Rahman Dhulu, said an argument started on Friday between Imon’s sister, Sultana, and Tania over dirty stagnant water outside their home.

Sonia said Tania had asked Sultana to clean the water, after which Sultana informed her brother Imon, who was then living in Saudi Arabia. Imon returned to Bangladesh later that same day.

“An argument broke out on Friday between Imon’s sister Sultana and Tania over stagnant dirty water in front of their house. After Tania asked Sultana to clean the water, Sultana informed her brother Imon, who was in Saudi Arabia.”

The dispute involved residents living in close proximity, where everyday concerns around shared spaces and conditions outside homes can quickly affect multiple families. In this case, the disagreement escalated over the following day, ending in a fire that injured several people.

Allegation of Threat Before the Fire

Sonia said Imon made threats on Saturday afternoon, saying he would die and take others with him. She said he then poured petrol inside his room and set it alight, leaving those inside with burn injuries.

“He then poured petrol in his room and set it on fire, causing everyone inside the room to suffer burns.”

The death of Imon has added a fatal outcome to an incident that also left others undergoing treatment for serious injuries. The condition of the remaining burn victims was not detailed.

Family disputes can become especially dangerous when threats, flammable substances or confined indoor spaces are involved. A fire set inside a room can spread rapidly, leaving little time for people nearby to escape and exposing others to smoke, heat and flames. The injuries in this case underline how an argument between neighbours and relatives can lead to severe consequences for everyone present.

Imon’s death occurred less than a day after the fire. Medical staff said the scale of his injuries was critical, with burns covering most of his body. The other injured people remained linked to the same family-home setting in Shyambazar Chamak Tuli, where the dispute and subsequent fire unfolded.

The case centres on a conflict that began over stagnant water outside a residence, escalated after Imon’s return from Saudi Arabia, and resulted in a fire that injured five people. Authorities and medical workers will continue to deal with the consequences for the survivors while Imon’s family faces the loss of a young member who had been working abroad.
