Russia Claims More Than 1,200 Ukrainian Troops Lost in One Day of Fighting

Thebangladaily.com – Russia’s Defence Ministry said Tuesday that Ukrainian forces suffered about 1,225 personnel losses during the previous 24 hours of combat, while also claiming advances and a series of strikes across several regions. The figures, released on September 15, could not be independently verified.

Moscow said the heaviest Ukrainian losses occurred in the operational area assigned to Russia’s Centre Battlegroup. More than 345 Ukrainian soldiers were said to have been killed or wounded there.

The ministry placed additional Ukrainian losses at up to 285 troops in the East Battlegroup sector, about 200 in the West Battlegroup area and up to 195 in the North Battlegroup zone. It also claimed around 165 losses in the South Battlegroup’s area of operations and roughly 35 in the Dnepr Battlegroup sector.

Claims of strikes in Odesa and western Ukraine

Russia said its forces carried out overnight attacks on military-linked infrastructure, including a storage site for equipment in Velyka Balka in the Odesa region. The facility was described by Moscow as a location used to support Ukrainian forces.

The Russian military also said a cargo ship and a ferry were struck at the port of Chornomorsk, another site in the Odesa region. It further claimed to have targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine that it said was being used to move European-supplied military equipment.

Such claims highlight the continuing importance of transport routes, ports and logistics facilities in the war. Both sides have repeatedly sought to disrupt the movement of weapons, fuel, equipment and personnel behind the front lines. Details concerning the reported overnight strikes, including their impact and any damage, were not independently confirmed.

Over the same 24-hour period, Moscow said it hit Ukrainian fuel and transportation networks, drone assembly and storage locations, military formations and foreign fighters at 39 separate sites. The ministry said strategic aircraft, attack drones, missile units and artillery were involved in the operations.

Fighting reported near Kharkiv

In its update, the Defence Ministry also claimed that two Ukrainian assault groups attempting a counterattack near Kazachya Lopan in the Kharkiv region had been fully destroyed.

Russia’s Northern Battlegroup was said to have taken control of the Olkhovatka area in Kharkiv. Moscow further asserted that Ukrainian forces surrounded there were being eliminated. The statements could not be independently verified, and Ukraine had not publicly confirmed the Russian account.

The ministry said fighting continued around Malaya Volchya, while heavy artillery fire was directed at Ukrainian positions near Buzovoye and Khripuny. The Kharkiv region has remained a major area of military activity because of its proximity to the Russian border and its importance to operations in northeastern Ukraine.

Battlefield statements issued during the conflict are often difficult to assess in real time. Military authorities on both sides regularly provide estimates of enemy losses, equipment destruction and territorial gains, but access to front-line areas is limited and competing accounts are common.

Drone interceptions and air-defence claims

Russia also said its air-defence units intercepted or destroyed more than 200 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions overnight. In a broader tally covering the past 24 hours, the ministry said six guided aerial bombs and 589 Ukrainian drones had been shot down.

Drone warfare has become a central feature of the conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine using unmanned systems for surveillance, targeting and long-range attacks. Claims involving drone interceptions can be especially difficult to verify independently because many incidents take place far from areas accessible to outside observers.

The latest Russian statement included a wide-ranging cumulative inventory of Ukrainian equipment Moscow says it has destroyed since the start of its military operation in Ukraine. Russia put the total at 674 warplanes, 284 helicopters, 236,589 unmanned aerial vehicles, 672 surface-to-air missile systems, 30,930 tanks and other armoured vehicles, 1,777 multiple-launch rocket systems, 36,463 artillery pieces and mortars, and 71,960 special military vehicles.

Those overall numbers, like the daily casualty and battlefield claims, remain unverified. Independent confirmation of military losses has been limited throughout the war, while the scale of combat and the speed of developments can make reliable assessment challenging.

The Russian ministry’s update presents its account of a day marked by reported pressure along several fronts, attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and continued air-defence activity. The true extent of the reported troop losses, damage and territorial changes remains unclear without independent evidence.
