US eases restrictions on Iran for final World Cup group game
Adjustments for Iranian team’s Seattle match
US eases restrictions on Iran for final – The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday that travel protocols for the Iranian team will be relaxed ahead of their World Cup match in Seattle. This change allows the squad to arrive two days before their June 26 game, a departure from the previous requirement to enter the country just one day prior to kick-off in Los Angeles. The team had to depart almost immediately after their matches there, which limited their preparation time.
“For the Iranian team’s third match in Seattle on June 26, the team has been permitted to come into the US two days before the match,” said a spokesperson for the department. “The Iran team will still be required to leave the day the match ends. The overall security measures and protocol are the same. We remain committed to providing the safest tournament possible for players, staff, and fans alike.”
Team’s schedule and travel logistics
An Iranian team representative confirmed to AFP that the squad will depart from Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday. This follows their arrival in the city, where they have been based, ahead of the upcoming clash against Egypt on Friday. The team’s prior matches in Los Angeles, including a 2-2 draw with New Zealand on June 15 and a 0-0 stalemate against Belgium on Sunday, had been under strict time constraints.
Coach praises squad’s resilience
Iran’s coach, Amir Ghalenoei, acknowledged his team’s ability to handle challenges during their recent games. He described the circumstances as “trying” but commended their performance. Ghalenoei had earlier labeled Iran as the “most oppressed team in the World Cup,” a statement that has drawn attention to the broader context of their participation.
Off-field challenges for Team Melli
The World Cup’s preparation was complicated for Iran by external factors. The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, initiated in February by the United States and Israel, cast doubt on the team’s involvement until the last moment. Initially, the squad planned to establish their base in Arizona, but they shifted to Tijuana at the last minute due to visa issues. The US denied entry to a dozen support staff members, affecting their logistics.
Under FIFA rules, most teams arrive the day before their match, though exceptions permit two-day advance arrivals. This adjustment for Iran reflects the host nations’ efforts to balance security with the team’s needs, ensuring smoother operations for their final group encounter.
